Real hardwood for homes that were built to last

A solid hardwood floor is a single piece of wood from top to bottom, and that is why it can be sanded and refinished again and again. At Floor Crafters, we have been helping Front Range families choose and install it since 1988, and it remains one of the things we most enjoy doing.

Many of the 1960s through 1980s ranches and split-levels around Broomfield, Louisville, and Lafayette still have original oak hiding under carpet. Boulder's older bungalows often do too. We are happy to pull up a corner during your visit and tell you honestly whether it is worth saving. If it is, hardwood refinishing may be all you need.

Choosing solid wood species and finishes

Red oak and white oak are the usual favorites for good reason: they wear well under dogs and kids and are easy to stain. Maple is tighter and lighter, hickory shows bold color variation, and walnut gives a deep, quiet look. Ash is another option with a lively grain.

Because our mobile design showroom comes to you, we set boards down in your hallway or living room and you see them next to your cabinets, trim, and furniture. Whether you prefer prefinished boards or a floor sanded and finished on site, we will explain the tradeoffs so the choice is yours.

  • Prefinished - faster to install, with a factory finish and slightly beveled edges
  • Site-finished - sanded flat after install for a seamless look and fully custom color
  • Plank width - narrower boards move less in dry winters, wider boards give a modern feel
  • Grain cut - rift and quartered boards stay steadier than plain-sawn

How solid hardwood is installed in your home

Solid wood is nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor, and over a concrete slab we would first build a plywood layer or steer you toward engineered hardwood. We check flatness and moisture before we start, then let the wood adjust to the home's humidity so it does not move excessively after installation.

Layout matters too. Straight runs, random-length patterns, diagonals, and chevron or herringbone are all possible. We plan where the boards start so the main sightlines in your home look balanced, and we handle the baseboards, transitions, and vents so the finished room looks complete.

Solid wood stairs and living with your new floor

Hardwood on a staircase is one of the most noticeable details in a home, and it takes patience to get right. We can pair treads and risers with your main floor, and our hardwood stairs page explains how that process works.

Living with solid wood in Colorado is simple with a few habits: keep winter humidity from falling too far, use felt pads on furniture, and wipe up wet boots promptly during mud season. Within ten days of installation we return to confirm the floor is doing well, and The Floor Crafters guarantee stands behind our work.

Real & Solid Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions

With normal care it can last many decades, because it can be sanded and refinished several times. That is a big reason it holds its appeal in older Boulder County homes.

Not directly. Solid wood needs a wood subfloor, so over a slab we either build one up or recommend engineered hardwood, which is more stable on concrete and suits basements.

Prefinished boards arrive coated and install quickly, with tiny bevels at the seams. Site-finished floors are sanded and coated in your home for a flatter surface and a custom color, but need a longer schedule.

Generally we lean toward engineered wood over radiant heat because it handles temperature changes better. If you love solid wood, narrower and quartered boards reduce movement, and we will discuss it honestly during your visit.

Small seasonal gaps are normal in Colorado's very dry winters and often close as humidity returns. Keeping indoor humidity reasonable helps. You can read what customers say on our reviews page.
