Hardwood stair installation in Boulder County, Colorado

Stairs are the first thing guests notice and the hardest-working part of the house. Floor Crafters installs hardwood treads, risers, and nosings that feel solid underfoot and match the flooring around them. Many Boulder County ranches, tri-levels, and split-levels have two or three short flights, so a stair upgrade can change the feel of a whole home.

We handle the whole project: removing old carpet and padding, checking the structure underneath, fitting new treads, finishing, and cleaning up. If you are picking new flooring too, start with our hardwood flooring overview.

Solid or engineered treads

Solid oak and maple treads are traditional and can be refinished later. Engineered treads are a good alternative when the main floor is engineered or you want added stability. Either way, the look comes from the wood species, the stain, and the sheen, which we sample in your home.

  • Red oak, white oak, maple, hickory, and walnut options
  • Stain sampled against your existing floors so they blend
  • Open-end, boxed, and curved stairs reviewed during the visit
  • Matching nosing details for a finished look
  • Pairs well with a refinished main floor - see hardwood refinishing

What the process looks like

The first stage is demolition and prep: we remove carpet, staples, and tack strips, and look for loose stringers or squeaks that should be fixed before new wood goes on. Next we fit and fasten treads and risers, then finish with a durable coating that suits stairs.

We plan the schedule around your household, because stairs are hard to avoid. Most families can stay home, and we will tell you in advance when the staircase will be off-limits and when it is safe to use again.

What the process looks like

Matching your stairs to the rest of the house

Most homeowners want the stairs to feel like a natural extension of the floor. We work from the same species and stain choice, and we match the sheen so there is no jarring change at the landing. If you prefer a deliberate contrast, such as darker treads with painted risers, we can show you how that looks.

Dry Colorado winters can open small gaps in wood stairs, and sun from tall entry windows can shift color over time. We talk through both. After install we check back within ten days, backed by The Floor Crafters guarantee. Read what neighbors say on our reviews page.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions

Yes. We remove the carpet, padding, and staples, then check what is underneath. If the existing structure is solid, we build on it. Damaged treads are replaced as part of the job.

A typical staircase takes a few days from prep to finish, and we will give you a clear schedule at your estimate. Finish needs time to cure, so we explain how to use the stairs in the meantime.

That is the goal. We sample stain and sheen on the same species in your home so you can approve the look before we begin.

Properly finished stairs are not unusually slick, especially with satin or matte coatings. If you have small children or pets, we can discuss options for added grip.
